The Artists' Press is a fully equipped studio that provides complete
technical assistance to artists. Lithographs, linocuts and monotypes
are printed on a Takach direct litho press, (maximum sheet size 112
x 76 cm). For lithography we use stones or ball-grained aluminium
plates. We have a UV plate burner to allow use of photographic and
computer generated elements if the artist desires. Letterpress is
printed on a Vandercook letterpress proof press, (maximum sheet size
56 x 76 cm). Our etching press has a bed size of 100 x 200 cm. We
have in-house facilities for making polymer plates for letterpress
and photogravure. For layout and the design of artists books,
Macintosh computers and scanners are on hand. We are able to include
a range of techniques such as chine collé and embossing in prints.
The studio has four printing presses, a ball graining machine, book-presses, a variety of different sized stones, drying racks, archival print and paper storage facilities, an evaporative cooler, extraction fans, a selection of leather and rubber rollers and a dedicated drawing area for artists to work in. A wide variety of paper (imported and local) is available for artists to select from, and all the necessary top quality printmaking materials are available for artists to use. We also have a small reference library that focuses on printmaking and African art and culture. For the binding of artists books we contract the work to bookbinders in South Africa who do the work by hand using the finest materials available.
